I really wanted Asuka to win, but I’m sure she’ll get her chance at the title later. I didn’t really like how obvious it was that Eva Marie was going to spend the whole time out of the ring. Add to that how Carmella exited the ring and the ending was not surprising at all. There was no drama to it. If they had either Asuka or Eva Marie not get eliminated right away when they were surprised it would have helped a little. Or not using the ring out technicality at all would have been even better I think.

Ring Area
Bayley runs to the ring and congratulates Carmella. Asuka backs up the ramp, smiling.

Show Impressions
The show as a whole was a little underwhelming. I’m looking forward to what’s coming, but the matches on this show weren’t great. Being the first NXT from Full Sail in over a month and the first one in 2016, I thought they might have done a little more with the show. I liked that all the women in the battle royal had equal time to talk before the match.

I think the ending to the battle royal was anti-climactic as well. I wanted Asuka to win, but I can kind of see why she didn’t. I think it’s going to be hard to keep anyone as a babyface if they take the title away from Bayley, and I suspect they might want to put the title on Asuka at some point. I think the better story might be someone turning on Bayley. Like her friend Carmella. They kind of built up that same story last year with Balor and Joe though, so they might not want to do it again right away.

I think the battle royal also showed the effect the “Divas Revolution” on the main roster had on NXT. The women’s division seems to have gotten fairly thin. There are still some women that are just as strong or stronger than the main roster women (Asuka, Emma, Bayley) but a lot of the rest of them have a way to go. I think that showed in the Rumble. And when your biggest heel is someone that people just don’t care about (I don’t think people dislike Eva Marie as a heel, they dislike her because she’s still terrible after all this time with the company), that’s a problem. I’m not saying the women’s division is bad, just that it’s not nearly as strong as it was. I think a high profile signing might help.

Match of the Night
Dash & Dawson vs The Ascension
It wasn’t a great selection to choose from tonight, but I really like Dash & Dawson’s teamwork.
